Sea‐Level Fall Driving Enhanced Hydrothermal and Tectonic Activities: Evidence From a Sediment Core Near the Tectonic‐Controlled Tianxiu Vent Field, Carlsberg Ridge

چکیده

Hydrothermal activity on mid-ocean ridges plays an important role in shaping marine chemistry, yet the variability of hydrothermal venting and its forcing mechanism remain elusive. Here, we analyzed a sediment core obtained near tectonic-controlled Tianxiu vent field, Carlsberg Ridge, to reconstruct history. The documented two significant events (H1 H2) past 30 ka. H1 occurred at 24.1–24.5 ka during Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), while H2 10.5–11.6 deglacial period. Compared H2, was relatively weak, it concurrently with tectonic event. We suggest that caused by increased melt production associated decompression melting upper mantle sea-level fall, which is consistent previously published records, whereas likely triggered intense event depressurization LGM, unrecognized.

Evidence for methylotrophic symbionts in a hydrothermal vent mussel (bivalvia: mytilidae) from the mid-atlantic ridge.

Symbioses between chemolithoautotrophic bacteria and the major macrofaunal species found at hydrothermal vents have been reported for numerous sites in the Pacific Ocean. We present microscopical and enzymatic evidence that methylotrophic bacteria occur as intracellular symbionts in a new species of mytilid mussel discovered at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal vents. Two distinct ultrastruct...

Hydrothermal sediment alteration at a seafloor vent field: Grimsey Graben, Tjörnes Fracture Zone, north of Iceland

[1] An active seafloor hydrothermal system subjects the background sediments of the Grimsey Graben (Tjörnes Fracture Zone) to alteration that produces dissolution of the primary volcaniclastic matrix and replacement/precipitation of sulfides, sulfates, oxides, oxyhydroxides, carbonates and phyllosilicates. Three types of hydrothermal alteration of the sediment are defined on the basis of the do...

O-Proteobacterial diversity from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

The prokaryotic phylogenetic diversity was determined for a sample associated with an in situ growth chamber deployed for 5 days on a Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal vent (23322PN, 44357PW). The DNA was extracted from the sample and the 16S rDNA amplified by PCR. No Archaea were detected in the sample. Eighty-seven clones containing bacterial 16S rDNA inserts were selected. Based on restriction...

Rare earth element geochemistry of hydrothermal deposits and Calyptogena shell from the Iheya Ridge vent field, Okinawa Trough

Although the rare earth element (REE) geochemistry of hydrothermal systems have intensively been investigated at mid-oceanic ridges, studies are relatively few at the converging plate zones like the Okinawa Trough. The “chimney” deposits obtained by using submersible “SHINKAI 2000” from the Iheya Ridge site, Okinawa Trough are largely composed of massive carbonates and silicates with minor amou...
